John Clayton Allen and his twin brother Thomas Clifford Allen were born on October 17, 1869, in Sheakleyville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, to Nancy Anne Allen and an unknown father. At the time, Nancy was 17 and living with her parents John Steel Allen and Elfreda (Peirsol) Allen on the family farm in Salem, Mercer County, PA. As young children both twins remained on the farm under the care of the grand parents and Nancy's sister, Aunt Lillian.

John married Elfreda J. Armour on April 26, 1892, at the age of 23, in Sheakleyville, PA, with Reverend W.R. Bruce presiding. Sometime thereafter, John began his career as a merchant, where he owned and operated a general store in Adamsville, Crawford County, PA. The store remains in Adamsville today as My Grandmothers Teapot at the Adamsville General Store. Years later John and Elfreda opened the Allendale Inn in Adamsville, PA, which was a restaurant and "Bed and Breakfast" catering to locals and the vacationer from Pittsburgh. The specialty was a complete chicken dinner.

To John and Elfreda were born 4 children:
John Rodney, b. 11 June 1898, d. 19 Nov 1964;
Frances Bouetta, b. 19 Feb 1893, d. 27 Nov 1972;
Thomas Thurman, b. 18 Dec 1904, d. 29 Feb 1976; and
George Burton b. 17 Nov 1909, d. Jul 1976.

John died on June 9, 1938 and is buried in the Rocky Glen Cemetery, Adamsville, Crawford County, PA. Elfreda survived John another 10 years, passing away on September 14, 1948. She is buried next to John in the Rocky Glen Cemetery.
