Emma Meines Dayton, longtime resident of Whittier, died on May 10, 2014. She was born in San Bernardino on September 3, 1925. She was the youngest of 12 children born to Klass and Emma Meines. She was raised in Redlands and graduated from Redlands High School in 1942. She graduated from San Bernardino Valley School of Nursing in 1946.

Emma married John F Dayton Jr, also a graduate of Redlands High School, in 1944. After raising two children, she went back to being a nurse at Whittier Hospital where she worked for several years. She volunteered as a seamstress, sewing for the children at the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. She was an active member at Whittier Presbyterian Church. She became an accomplished golfer and world traveler, but her fondest joy was being a part of her grandchildren's lives, who affectionately called her "Gram".

Her husband John preceded her in death in 1980. Her daughter Judy Dayton Galliher (Jim) preceded her in death in 2011 and her surviving son; John F Dayton lll (Christine) lives in La Habra. Emma has 3 grandchildren: Joe Baranowski (Darlene), Sarah Dayton Billings (Daniel), and Rebecca Dayton. Also survived by her sister-in-laws: Mrs. Paul Meines, Redlands, CA and Mrs. Clarence Meines, Tucson, AZ and many nieces and nephews.
