Sarah Pearl (Isom) Hillhouse, 91, of Fort Gibson, OK, passed away at the Fort Gibson Nursing Home on Sunday, May 25, 2014 from complications of a stroke suffered six months ago. She was the fifth of seven children born to Allen and Marie (Grissom) Isom, March 4, 1923, in Fort Gibson, OK. Sarah was the beloved matriarch of the family and the last surviving sibling at the time of her death. She was a devoted wife to her deceased husband, William Eugene "Gene" Hillhouse, for 54 years. Sarah was a kind and generous sister to her now departed siblings and in-laws, Allen and Hazel Isom, Rebecca and Roy Maher, Mary June and Joe Hubbell, Fern and Marsena Norris, John Calloway Isom (killed in action D-Day of WWII), and Howard and Bettye Isom. A woman of faith, Sarah was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Gibson. Her primary formal service to the church was that of preparing food for special functions and for anyone in need. Sarah was a nurturing and adoring mother to her only child, Rhoda. Sarah was recognized during her full life as an accomplished cook, a consummate hostess, gifted seamstress, master gardener, talented doll maker, amateur genealogist, and an expert "scrap-booker". Even at her advanced age, Sarah remained a vital, energetic, and fully engaged woman with her family, friends, and the world around her until the day of the stroke. Sarah was employed at the OG&E Plant as a secretary during her early working years. She also worked for a while at the School for the Blind in Muskogee, and Kresses Variety Store, before taking her training to become a licensed beauty operator. Sarah owned and operated her home-based beauty shop until she reached retirement age. Funeral services for Sarah will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Fort Gibson, OK, with Pastor Barry Collins officiating.
