NEWPORT NEWS - Michael David Bunzey, 56, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2012.
He was born in Johnson City, N.Y., and had been an area resident for 21 years. He retired in May 2006, as a Senior Chief, from the U.S. Coast Guard after 30 years of service, and was a former volunteer fireman in Vestal, N.Y. Mr. Bunzey was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Bunzey; his daughter, Shannan Shaw and her husband, Stephen; his mother, Martha Bunzey; brother and sisters, Joelene Carey and her husband, Charles, Timothy Bunzey, and Deborah Evans; a brother-in-law, Dana Decker; a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ward Bunzey; and a sister, Bonnie Lou Decker.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2012, at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends until 8 p.m., after the service. Burial will be private.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of the Naval Medical Center, in Portsmouth, for their love and care during his extended illness.
