Erma Mary Schluter, lifelong resident of Modoc, passed away Jan. 27, 1988 at the Warner Mountain Nursing Center, Alturas. She was 65 years of age.
She was born to Fred and Ora (Session) Ash on Jan. 19, 1923. The entire family included six girls, one boy, two half-brothers and one half-sister.
Mrs. Schluter attended school in Ft. Bidwell. she married Robert Schluter in Reno, Nev. on Apr. 23, 1939, and they continued ranching in Ft. Bidwell. three children were born to the Schluters, two sons, Richard and Ron, and one daughter Elaine.
In Ft. Bidwell, Mrs. Schluter was a 4-H member and later became active not only as a home economics leader but helped with many different activities. She served on the Ft. Bidwell school board and was very active in community organizations, including the Grange and the Ft. Bidwell Community Church.
In January of 1961 the Schulters moved to Alturas where they purchased a ranch where Mr. Schluter lives today. Mrs. Schluter continued as an active leader in 4-H. She helped with the Modoc County Fair, where she was in charge of the floriculture department for many years. She was also a judge for Home Economics at the fair and at many fairs in California and Oregon.
Mrs. Schulter also helped to form a group of women saddle riders and she rode in many parades in California, Oregon and Nevada. She was also a former member of the Alturas Garden Club.
Erma Schluter was one of the founders of the Modoc County CowBelles. She served as president of that organization and won several CowBelle awards. She was a state membership chairman of the CowBelles. For years she wrote the CowBell Corner column appearing in the Modoc County Record.
She was also an active member of the Christian Women's Group and of the Modoc County Historical Society.
Mrs. Schluter sang at funerals for friends and enjoyed riding horseback, playing cards, and dancing. Besides being a wife, mother and homemaker, she could ride a horse, drive and work cattle, drive a tractor, and do many other ranch chores.
Mrs. Schulter is survived by her husband, Robert at the family ranch in Alturas; a daughter Elaine Wolfgang of Sonora; sisters Fern Doss and Jane Stevens of Alturas. Lucille Briles of Reno, and Louise Loughridge of Canby; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Federated Community Church of Alturas on Feb. 1, at 1:00 pm, with Rev. Ben Zandstra officiating. Internment was in the Fort Bidwell Cemetery."
