Clara Alice, also known as Alice, was born to James Franklin Russell and his wife Mary "Pollyanna" (Groshong) Russell, on 6 November 1866 in Ursa, Adams county, Illinois.

On her mother's side, she went back to a founding family of Ursa and Adams county, Illinois.

Alice had an older brother, James Perry Russell; and younger siblings, Mary Ellen, George, and Annie Bell Russell.

Alice grew up with her family in Ursa, and on 15 May 1882, wed James E Sparrow in Adams county, Illinois.

James was a farmer.

James and Alice Sparrow had eleven children: Jesse Franklin, Edward Cleveland, Roy Frederick, George, Bessie, Chester Fred, Alva James, Charles, Clarence R, Pearl M, and Ruby E Sparrow.

Alice (Russell) Sparrow died in Quincy, Adams county, Illinois on 23 November 1941 and is buried at New Providence cemetery in her hometown of Ursa.
