Helen was born to Dr. Joseph and Josephine Szwajkowski Norwich in March 1909. She was the oldest of three surviving daughters (the couple's first child passed away as an infant). Helen married Louis Marfell on her birthday, March 21, in 1930 in the LaSalle Congregational Church in LaSalle, Ill. Helen and Louis worked at the local clock factory, Westclox. They raised two children.
Helen was a great homemaker and cook. Louis and Helen were avid vegetable gardeners and Helen would regularly can vegetables each fall. After her husband passed away in 1964, Helen spent most of her time with her adult children and two sisters.
