DEL GRATIA (nee SMITH) DOSS-HEMSLEY was born in St. Louis, Missouri to Jonathon and Clarabelle (Walker) Smith.

Del Gratia grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois and there she attended the public schools. After graduating from Lincoln Sr. High in 1959, she received a B.A. in Education from Illinois State University at Normal, an M.A. in Educational Administration from University of Illinois at Urbana and a Doctoral of Letters from Webster University, Webster Groves, Missouri.

Del Gratia taught in the Springfield, Illinois, East St. Louis and St. Louis Public Schools. She later became the Director of Adult Education in St. Louis, Missouri. She worked extensively with the St. Louis Chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Senior Citizens Ministry at Lane Tabernacle CME Church. She organized Senior Citizens (Health Ministry) groups at area churches. Her most recent recognition for outstanding community service was given by One Hundred Black Men of St. Louis.

Del Gratia was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jonathon Smith, Jr.
