LeRoy was born June 18, 1928, in Lee's Summit, Mo., but lived all of his life in Independence. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He received the Army Occupational medal while in Stugard, Germany. He was inducted into service November 15, 1950, and discharged October 31, 1952, as a Corporal. LeRoy went to work for the Independence Fire Department in 1953 and worked there for four years. He left the department then returned April 6, 1960, and retired as Captain July 1, 1983. LeRoy was a retired member of I.A.F.F. Local 781, Independence 76 Fire Company, American Legion, Tirey J. Ford Post 21, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1000, all of Independence, and Independence Lagers Retiree's. He was an avid bowler, bowling in all local lanes, as well as King Louie in Kansas City, Kan. He loved hunting and fishing and life in general, especially time spent with his family and friends. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Nora (Watkins) Akers, and one sister, Eleanora Thompson.
LeRoy leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Helen, of the home; and their families consisting of six children, three sons, Leslie Charles and wife, Mary, of Garden City, Mo., Randolph Eugene and wife, Kelly, of Oak Grove, Mo., and Thomas Randall and wife, Wynee, of Sedalia, Mo., and three daughters, Sharon Breshears and husband, Norman, of Oak Grove, Angela Seetin and husband, Danny, of Polo, Mo., and Debra Thompson and husband, Kirk, of Blue Springs, Mo.; three brothers, Albert Akers Jr. and wife, Charlotte, of Moline, Kan., RC Akers of Lowery City, Mo., and Kenneth Akers of Independence; a sister, Juanita Card and husband, Harold, of Carl Junction, Mo.; and many dear grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, Independence, (816) 252-7900. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel. The family suggests donations in his name to the First Baptist Church of Oak Grove.
