Shirley L. Fast, 78, died Sept. 5, 2008, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

She was born Jan. 11, 1930, in Peoria, Ill, the daughter of Stanley L. and Elsie A. Braun Johnson. She graduated from Augusta High School in 1947. A longtime resident of Hutchinson, she worked originally as a telephone operator and later for many years as a school secretary for Wiley Elementary School (USD 308) and Prosperity Elementary (USD 313).

She was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and served on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school, played handbells, and sang in the choir. She sang Messiah with the Bethany Oratorio Society in Carnegie Hall in May of 1997. She was an outstanding cook and was famous for her homemade caramels she produced for Christmas every year.

On June 1, 1952, she married Jack Fast in Hutchinson. He survives. Other survivors include: son, David, Kansas City, Mo; daughters, Janet Fast, Cheryl Jerome and husband Rex, and Susan Bacon and husband Robert, all of Hutchinson; brothers, Dennis Johnson and wife Bonnie, Gary Johnson and wife Janice, all of Hutchinson, and Allan Johnson and wife Sue, Lake Arrowhead, Calif; sisters, Lorraine Robinson and husband Buel, Denver, Karen Paulsen, Minneapolis, Minn; four grandchildren, Andrew Jerome, Thomas, Rachel, and Caroline Bacon; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marilyn Hern.

Memorial service will be Wednesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 140 E. 30th, Hutchinson, with Pastors Tim Carey and Daniel Swenson presiding. Friends may sign the book today, Monday, and Tuesday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Cremation has taken place. Following the memorial service, the family will receive friends, and all friends are invited to eat a meal with the family in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the church or the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, in care of the mortuary.
