Elvin served as a Staff Sergeant on B-17 #42-3179, 347th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Woodson County, Kansas prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 6, 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17 #42-3179, while on a bombing mission, was shot down by enemy flak and crashed near Ragusa, Sicily during the war.

Elvin was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Elvin's headstone, in error, shows the 47th Bomber Squadron. However the headstone requested asked that it be shown as the 347th Bomber Squadron.

He was originally interred overseas and was later repatriated here on August 2, 1948.
