1. John Keith Mills
2. Phillip Michael Mills
Hilyard was an Air Force Sergeant based at Schilling Air Base in Salina, Kansas.
On July 16, 1962, Sonny and his young son, John Keith were riding on a rubber raft in Lake Kanapolis near Ellsworth, Kansas when John Keith allegedly slipped off and into the water. Hilyard made a desperate attempt at rescuing his son and both drowned. Sonny's body was recovered a short time later but the son's body wasn't recovered until two days later.
