He was born on Sunday, 08 September 1929, in Coalinga, CA., and was the son of William Rudolph Sommermeyer and Gladys (Cox) Sommermeyer.
William graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1947 and later attended Bakersfield College in 1950 and attended UC Berkeley and graduated in June of 1952.
William married Marcia Ann Cliff on Sunday, 28 January 1951.
Following graduation, he served in the Civil Engineer Corps of the United States Navy from 1952 to 1955 during the Korean War and was a registered Civil Engineer with the State of California for over 55 years.
William liked to attend the annual Sommermeyer family reunion in Scribner, Neb.
William was selected as the 1964 Goleta Man of the Year and served as president of the Goleta Valley Library and chairman of the Santa Barbara County Committee on the School District Organization.
He was a perpetual member of The Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW); commander of the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg Chapter of MOWW for three terms; chairmen of the National Security Committee for MOWW National and had received the Silver Patrick Henry Award.
Mr. Sommermeyer is survived by his wife, Marcia Ann (Cliff) Sommermeyer, daughter, Sally (Sommermeyer) Payne, son, Jim Sommermeyer.
He was preceded in death by his son, William R. Sommermeyer.
