Ellen grew up in upstate New York. After graduating from high school, during war time in 1944, she entered the Nurse Cadet Corps, attending New York University, Belleview School of Nursing. She received her Certificate of Nursing in August of 1947.
Ellen met and married William F. "Bill" Ostrander in December of 1946, and they had five children together. Her husband was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater, and they met at a post-war celebration in New York City. After the war, Bill joined the General Electric Company in Schenectady. He was transferred to the GE facility here, and they moved to the Waynesboro area in 1956. Bill passed away in 2001. Ellen was a registered nurse, and she worked in that capacity at DuPont, Waynesboro Hospital and Fairfax Hall School.
During her life in Waynesboro, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Waynesboro Women's Club. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, she sang in the choir, and continued with her love of music.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Robert, Donald and Richard.
Survivors include her five sons and three daughters-in-law, Bill, of Solomons, Maryland, David and Linda of Fairfax, Virginia, Reid of Galax, Virginia, Bob and Barb of Waynesboro, and Gregg and Rose of Santa Rosa, California; her six grandsons, Ross, Christopher, Eric, Ryan, Ben and Mark; and her six great-grandchildren, Chase, Caroline, Molly, Anna, Wyatt and Elliott.
Following cremation, the family will receive friends at an open visitation, at McDow Funeral Home in Waynesboro, this coming Friday evening, May 30, 2014, from 6 until 7 p.m.
At a later date, there will be a private burial at Arlington National Cemetery, where she will join her husband.
Memorial donations may be made to Summit Square in Waynesboro, and to the Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.
