He graduated from Cascia Hall Prep in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1955, he graduated with a BA in political science from the University of Colorado Boulder. From 1955-1958, he served as a Lieutenant JG in the US Naval Reserve.
On July 24, 1958, he married Gail Cynthia Shepherd in Denver, Colorado. The marriage lasted seventeen years, and produced three sons: Mark, Christopher and Michael. In 1980, he married Donna Lynn Jones in Phoenix, Arizona. That marriage produced two more sons; Jonathan and Stephen.
Donald was the owner and operator of Ace Drilling Company in Phoenix, Arizona for over twenty-five years. In 1988, he was granted a patent for water filtration technology. Previously he worked in sales for both Philips North America and 3M Corporation.
Donald enjoyed flying Cessna's and traveling with his family throughout the western United States and Mexico in his motor home. He is preceded in death by both his parents, his siblings, John Dorsey Iams, and Katherine Virginia Iams; as well as both of his former spouses. He is survived by his five sons, as well as two grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being performed by Indian School Messinger Mortuary in Scottsdale. A memorial ceremony is scheduled for June 6th to be held at the National Cemetery of Arizona.
