Wayne went into the United States Air Corps on March 11, 1942. He was a lead bombardier flying 52 missions during WWII. While walking down the street in Italy he ran into his brother, Ethan, and they enjoyed a bottle of scotch right there in the street. Before the war Wayne had met his future wife, Helen Lorraine Hobbs and they were married November 14, 1946 in Winnetka, Illinois. Wayne and Helen had two children.
Wayne stayed in the Air Force and served again in Korean War, making the military his life career. They moved to Spokane, Washington and Omaha, Nebraska and once was stationed in England for 3 years. During the Vietnam War he was stationed in Korea as a supply officer for the Air Force. He retired in 1970 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. They lived in Riverside, California and then moved to San Antonio, Texas where he died June 22, 1998. He is buried at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
