Larry's mother died when he was very young, not too long after his sister, Rita, was born. Larry had two older brothers, Ronald and Tom. Al Assmann raised his family alone.

Larry died in a car accident during his junior year of high school. The accident was not his fault. It was a terrible tragedy in which 1967 JCHS graduate, John Wiepert, was also killed and three other young men were injured. Three classmates (Jerry Rhoades, Kevin Wand, and Tom Whitver) recall being pall bearers. They were all from the Catholic Church and members of Larry's class. Larry would have graduated in the Jefferson Community High School Class of 1969. He was well-liked, friendly, and had a great smile. He was a member of Future Farmers of America and lived his entire life in Jefferson.
