She was the daughter of Alexander W. Buel and Mary A. Ackley Buel.
On November 22, 1870 as Harriet Clarissa Buel, she married Louis James Mercur in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

Mrs. Mercur Dies At Home In Palms
Funeral Service Will Be Held in Detroit This Afternoon at 2 O'clock
The funeral of Mrs. Clara Buel Mercur, who died Friday at her home in the Palms Apartments, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Mercur was the widow of Colonel James Mercur, who up to his death was Professor of Engineering at West Point Academy. Mrs. Mercur has been a resident of Detroit for a number of years. Alexander W. Buel, who was congressman from this district just prior to the Civil War, was Mrs. Mercur's father. She was born April 12, 1842, at 541 Jefferson Avenue. While a resident of this city, she has been active in work at Christ Church and in the affairs of the Girls' Friendly Society. Three daughters, Mrs. A.G. Lott, wife of Captain Lott, of the Sixth Cavalry and Elizabeth and Sarah Mercur survive. Services will be held in Christ Church after which the body will be sent to West Point, where it will be buried beside that of Colonel Mercur.
