Melvena was born in Oklahoma then somewhere in the 1920s the family moved to Pocatello, Idaho and finished their raising there and many had their children there as well. During the Depression the family moved frequently looking for work and some of them eventually stayed in California.

A number of the Betty children battled mental illnesses and substance abuse most of their lives. Melvena was one of them. She married DeSales Morgan (the brother of her brother Raymond's wife) in 1931. They had a son, Louis DeSales, and a daughter. Melvena and DeSales divorced due to her alcoholism. DeSales married again to Frankie Keesee, and Melvena married several times more and had a third child with husband Paul Trascher. During her adult life Melvena lived mostly in San Francisco and the surrounding area. In the 1970s she ran a boarding house in the city. She passed on in California and was transported to Shoshone for burial.
