Bruce Dennis Carden, 79 of Waynesville, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Silver Bluff Nursing Home.

He was born in Jackson County, May 31, 1933, to the late Floyd and Bertha Elmore Carden.

Bruce was a member of Waynesville First Baptist Church and was very active in his Sunday School class. He was a lifelong learner and educator who truly loved his family. Bruce was tender hearted with a strong sense of justice. He also enjoyed wildlife and a good political debate.

Bruce served honorably in the United States Air Force and received his Bachelors and two Masters degrees from Western Carolina Teachers College.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Floyd Carden, Jr., two sisters, Mary Carden and Lenora Franklin.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Lois Buckner Carden; son, Mark Carden (Nancy), daughter, Renee Jones (Paul); two granddaughters, Jennifer Basinger and Stephanie Patterson; two great-granddaughters, Jane-Claire and Emma Basinger.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, March 28, 2013, in the sanctuary of Waynesville First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Robert Prince officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00-3:00 PM prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at the Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park with military honors.
