From INDEPENDENCE OR ANNIHILATION by William L.Caynor,Jr.: James William Branham was born in Greenbrier County, [West] Virginia in 1835. In the Civil War, James served as a Private in Company A of the 27th Virginia Infantry Regiment. After the first battle of Manassas, Company A was transferred to artillery and became the Alleghany Light Artillery (aka Carpenter's Battery). Sometime later, James was transferred as a staff officer to General John Echols as 1st Lieutenant.
