ASTORIA - Betty Cassel, 88, formerly of Astoria, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at the Sunrise on Old Meridian in Carmel, Ind.
Betty had battled bravely against Alzheimer's for several years.
She was born Elizabeth Barrett on June 27, 1925, to John and Edith (Coleman) Barrett in Ipava, Ill. She grew up on the family farm, east of Ipava, with an older sister, Mary (Wickwire); a younger sister, Margaret (Campbell); her two brothers, Bob and Paul; and the Coleman cousins, Ellen, Jack, Lawrence, Raymond, Adeline and Sarah. Betty preferred homework to chores on the farm and had hoped to attend college after graduating from Ipava High School in 1943. Lacking the financial resources for college, however, Betty worked as a bookkeeper at Camp Ellis for the U.S. Army and in other bookkeeping positions in Peoria and Chicago. Betty married William "Bill" Cassel on Nov. 27, 1948, in Havana, Ill.
Betty has two sons, Bob (and Nancy) of Tinley Park, Ill., and Jim (and Debbie) of Carmel, Ind.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Stigler, Julie Richardson, Mike Cassel and David Cassel; and four great-grandchildren, Addison, Jack and Luke Stigler and Will Richardson.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, Robbie Cassel; and her siblings.
Bill and Betty ran a successful grocery business in Astoria, in partnership with Bill's brother, Chuck, and his wife, Pauline. Betty worked in the home, did the major part of the bookkeeping for the grocery business and made countless pounds of potato salad and chicken salad for sale at the store.
Bill and Betty shared a love for each other and their children, a love of hard work and the companionship of many, many close friends in and around Astoria. The years were full with family, work and friends. As the years went on and the business was sold, Betty devoted more of her time to visiting her children and grandchildren and hobbies such as gardening, reading and the stock market. Not having had the opportunity to attend college herself, Betty had always stressed the importance of education, and among her proudest moments were those spent attending and celebrating the college graduations of all five of her grandchildren. She will certainly be there in spirit at the graduations of her four great-grandchildren and those yet to come.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who cared deeply about all family members. She was smart, wise and confident when faced with life's tough choices. She was proud of the business success she and Bill achieved with Chuck and Pauline, and though she worked very hard to achieve that success, she also had a great deal of fun with family and friends when the workday was over. She and Bill were equal partners in everything, and they had a wonderful life together.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lewistown, Ill. Father Anthony Bernas will officiate. Visitation will be held at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria on Friday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to noon. Interment will be in the Astoria Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
Condolences may be sent to the family at shawgomemorialhome.org.
