SCOTTSBURG - The graveside funeral will be held Jan. 27 for Loren Claude Gates of Scottsburg, who died Jan. 21 of causes related to congestive heart failure. He was 81.

He was born Dec. 30, 1924, in Funkley, Minn., to Claude and Hazel Belford Gates. He and his wife, JoAnn, were married Oct. 14, 1950, in Republic, Wash.

At the age of 16, he joined the Army and served with the 82nd, 101st and 151st airborne divisions during World War II.

Gates worked for the federal highway department for 37 years, retiring in 1979. He helped start the Scottsburg Fire Department in 1980 and was on the Coast PAC for nine years. After retirement, he worked for 13 years as a guard at International Paper. He was also a pilot car driver for West State in Eugene for eight years.

He enjoyed hunting, playing poker, cooking and trying new recipes. He was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry of Portland; two daughters, Shurlee Sanders of Scottsburg and Kathie Snyder of Hermiston; eight grandchildren; and six great-grand- children.

Friday's service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem is in charge of arrangements.
