Clarence John Boettiger, March 25, 1900 – October 31, 1950, former son-in-law of President Roosevelt, jumped to his death from the seventh floor of a Manhattan hotel. He was born in Chicago to Adam C Boettiger and Dorothea (Dora) Ott Boettiger. He dropped the name Clarence during high school and went by the name John Boettiger.
He was a lifelong newspaperman, and following a quick romance, he married Anna Roosevelt, the daughter of President Franklin Roosevelt. Their marriage didn't last and they divorced in 1948. John and Anna had one child together, John Boettiger, Jr. Following his divorce from Anna in 1948, he married Virginia Daly Lunn in November 1949. She had a daughter from her previous marriage to Richard Lunn. Richard and Virginia divorced in January 1949.
In addition to being a lifelong newspaperman, John also served in the US Army during World War II.
Mr. Boettiger had been depressed for sometime before his death and under medical care with a personal nurse with him. The morning of his death he asked that the window be open for fresh air and proceeded to jump out of the window to his death. .
Police found two notes left behind from Mr. Boettiger, one was illegible and the other one sent his love.
