Memorial services will be held for Charles Lee McCullin, 87, at the First Baptist Church in Homer on Saturday, March 8th at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. at the church. Officiating will be Dr. Jack Grisham, Dr. Buddy Shaw and Rev. Bryan Thurman. Services are under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Homer, Louisiana. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or to the donor's choice.
Born in Poland, Louisiana on November 6, 1926, he died peacefully at home in Homer, Louisiana on March 3, 2014.
He was a graduate of Louisiana College earning a Bachelor of Divinity followed by a Master of Religious Education and an Education Specialist degree from the New Orleans Theological Seminary. Friends made during this time remained close throughout his life.
He pastored churches in Fryeburg, Jamestown and Oak Ridge and was the founding pastor of Brookstown Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. In 1967 he left the pastorate to join the Home Mission Board (HMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention serving as director of Baptist Centers in New Orleans. He was called to Atlanta, Georgia, the home office of the HMB, to work as assistant director in Christian Social Ministries. With sensitivity to the needs of others he served with love and understanding until he retired in 1988 as the director.
1949-50 saw him as a social studies/history teacher and basketball coach at Jamestown High School. It was just one year but his students, even now, declare what an influence he was in their lives.
He was adored by his family. He was known for transporting his children's furniture and pets across the country without complaint. He sat/slept through many a granddaughter's dance recital. He supported us in whatever we chose to do and reminded us to be kind to another.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dora Fleming McCullin, and his daughters June Smith and husband James Smith, Resa Ott and husband Richard Ott, Robin Self and husband Don Self; grandchildren Daniel Smith, Catherine Griffith and husband Greg Griffith, Carolyn Ott, Michelle Taylor and husband George Taylor; great grandchild Austin Taylor and many nieces and nephews.
He loved life. He loved people and people loved him.
Sports were his passion, to play or to watch: golf, basketball, football. Go Tigers!
He was a hero. He stood up for what he believed and he stood his ground. He was genuinely kind and acted out his faith. He was the hands and feet of Christ. We are better people because we knew him.
