Adams was born Nov. 22, 1918 in Cook County, Illinois, a son of the late Eugene Lawrence and Alberta Coles Adams. He served his country for eight years in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired after serving 25 years in the U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Following his retirement, he worked as a mechanical engineer and had attended Crestview Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Mid-Atlantic Chapter, 11th Airborne Association, Special Forces Association and Moose Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Cribbs Adams; and a daughter, Sue Zann Adams.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Cagle Adams of the home; son, John K. Adams Jr. of Catawba, North Carolina; daughter, Sherry Moore of Augusta, Georgia; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will see friends from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Richmond County Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Kearse Jr. officiating.
