John Mastbergen

John Mastbergen, 94, of Primghar, Ia., passed away Monday, Aug. 6th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Grebow at Primghar. Death was due to infirmities of old age. He had been blind the past 19 years of his life.

He was born in 1850 at South Holland The Netherlands and passed away at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 28 days.

In 1870 he was married to Jennie Werkhoven and in 1892 they with their family came to America and settled near Middleburg, Ia., where Mr. Mastbergen was engaged in farming. They also farmed near Sheldon, Hospers, Ashton and Primghar.

In 1921 Mr. Mastbergen retired and lived at Primghar. For the last 30 years he has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Dora Grebow. He was a faithful member of the Reformed church, attending until old age prevented him from doing so.

Mrs. Mastbergen preceded him in death, passing away at Hospers in 1904. One son, 3 years old, died in Holland and one daughter, Mrs. John Zuiderweg (Bessie) passed away in October 1939.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dora Grebow, of Primghar; Mrs. John Bilsland, Sr., of Santa Cruz, Calif., and four sons, Herbert, Peter and Arie of Sheldon and John Jr. of Sanborn. He is also survived by a half-brother, Wm. Noordhoek of the Holland Home. Also surviving are 37 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Eight grandsons are in the service of their country and two of his granddaughters' husbands are in the service.

Funeral services were held on Friday August 10 at 1:00 o'clock at the Estep home at Primghar and at the Reformed church at Archer at 1:30 with Rev. Martin Hoekman officiating. Pallbearers were six grandsons, Garmt Gulderweg and Arie C. Mastbergen of Sheldon, Herbert Mastbergen of Melvin, W. H. Bilsland of Archer, Alvin Mastbergen of Sanborn and Laverne Estep of Primghar.

Interment was held at the cemetery east of Hospers where his wife was also laid to rest.
