Floyd J. Esche, 81, of LaSalle, IL died at 10:43 p.m. on December 13, 2004, in LaSalle Health and Rehab Center, LaSalle.
Following cremation, a visitation will be held between 4 and 7 p.m. on Friday, December 17, and a memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 18. Both will take place at the Grace United Methodist Church, 1345 Chartres St., LaSalle. Rev. Jennifer Wilson will officiate. Interment will be in Wisconsin at a later date. Arrangements are through Mueller and Pagani Funeral Home.
He began his career in journalism with the Manawa (Wis.) Advocate and the Iola (Wis.) Herald. In 1948 he joined the staff of the News-Tribune as state editor and also served as telegraph and page one editor before becoming managing editor in 1952. He was also an Opinion Page columnist for many years.
Specializing in makeup and newspaper design, he was instrumental in The News-Tribune's winning the prestigious Ayer-Cup as the best-designed newspaper in the U.S. in 1951 and 1952, beating out the New York Herald-Tribune and the New York Times both years. He created the Teen-Trib section.
He was a member of the LaSalle Rotary Club since 1952, a Paul Harris Fellow and club president in 1968-69. He also served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, Tri-City Tuberculosis Association, and the LaSalle Co. Mental Health Association. He belonged to Sigma Delta Chi (Society of Professional Journalists), the Jaycees, the American Inter-Professional Men?s Forum, the Illinois Valley Art League and the Interfaith Association for Racial Understanding. He was Scoutmaster of Troop 2. He was a mentor to many and left behind him a trail of smiles.
As a former member of the LaSalle First Congregational UCC for 50 years, he served as moderator, a Church school teacher and a deacon. He had been a member of Grace United Methodist Church for the past four years.
Mr. Esche is survived by his wife; two sons: the Rev. Dr. David O. (Sharon) Esche of Geneseo and Peter (Kathleen) Esche of East Lyme, CT; two daughters: Margaret (Joseph) Jankauskis of Sycamore and Allison Reidies of LaSalle; ten grandchildren; and a sister, Gretchen (Frederick) Heinritz of Appleton, WI.
Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, Rotary Foundation and Grace United Methodist Church.
