Esther married Calvin S. Harlan of Long Green, on Feb 11, 1879, at the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in Jarrettsville, Md. Calvin's brother David had married Esther's sister, Susan J. Watters just 4 months earlier. Their sister, Mary Ann Watters would later marry the third Harlan brother, William. Three Watters sisters married three Harlan brothers.

Mrs. Esther Harlan, wife of Mr. Calvin Harlan, died on Wednesday, April 3, at her residence near Baldwin, Baltimore County. She leaves surviving her, besides her husband, one daughter. Mrs. Harlan was a daughter of the late Robert A. Watters, of Watters' Cross Roads, and a sister of Walter Watters and Mrs. Philip G. Scarff. (Her death was due to breast cancer.)
