Automobile Pioneer. Betha Benz was the wife and business partner of automobile inventor, Karl Benz. In 1888 she embarked on the first long distance road trip (66 miles each way) to promote and prove the usefulness of the automobile. As a result of her trip, she suggested several improvements to the design such as brake lining and an additional gear for climbing. The Bertha Benz Memorial Route in Germany commemorates her journey.
