Gibbon-Lelia Bernice Hess, 101, of Gibbon, formerly of Shelton died Wednesday, Aug 23, 2000 at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon. Services will be at 11am on Friday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon with the Rev. John Goodbrake of Kearney officiating. Burial will be at the Shelton Cemetery. The casket will be open for viewing prior to services.
Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Baptist Church in Kearney or Gibbon Good Samaritan Center.
She was born Nov 24, 1898 in Shelton to H. Paige and Maude J (Mitchell) Walker. She graduated from Shelton High School and attended normal school. She taught school from 1919 to 1926 in the Shelton area.
On Aug 26, 1924 she married E. W. Hess in Grand Island. They lived in Shelton and several other mid-Nebraska towns while Mr. Hess was employed with the4 railroad. He died in 1952. She returned to Shelton in 1978 where she remained until moving to the Good Samaritan Center this year.
She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Kearney and D.A.R. Chapter of Gibbon.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Jennifer Hess of Port Richie, FL; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son and an infant daughter, one brother and one sister.
