Died of Typhoid fever at Southside Hospital
in Bayshore, resident of Sayville.
Obituary - John Joseph Griffin died at the Southside Hospital at midnight on Tuesday after an illness of three weeks of typhoid fever. Mr. Griffin was sick at his home here for about five days before he was taken to the Southside Hospital where he was for two weeks before he died. On Monday morning Dr. Hildreth of the hospital staff performed an operation in the hope of saving the young man's life. Mr. Griffin was born in Oakdale 26 years ago. He was educated in St. Charles College at Canyonville. Md., and it was there that he received his A. B. degree. Later he attended St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore. He was a successful salesman employed by the Decarie Incinerator Company of New York and made his home In Sayville. A year ago. in September, Mr. Griffin married Miss Mary Jean Winkler, daughter of Mrs. Agatha Winkler, of Sayville and Newark, N. J. Besides his wife he Is survived by a four-month-old daughter. Mary Jean, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Griffin, a brother, William, and four sisters, Mrs. Vern Doan, of Sayville, Mrs. Thomas Draper and Miss Mae Griffin of Queens Village, and Miss Lillian Griffin of Sayville. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock this morning at St. Lawrence's R. C. Church, Father George L. Gardiner officiating at the solemn high requiem mass. Interment was in St. Lawrence's Cemetery. He was a member of St. Lawrence's Church and also of the local council of the Knights of Columbus. Sayville was profoundly shocked on Wednesday morning when the news came out that this fine young man had succumbed to the dreaded typhoid. His young wife and little daughter as well as his parents and brothers and sisters have the deepest sympathy of the community.
