Philippe Henri "Henry" Bergmann was born in Kuhlendorf, Bas-Rhin, Alsace on 29 January 1821, the son of Philippe Bergmann and his wife, Marie Salome Goehry. He was the fifth of their eight known children and the eldest son. Phillipe Henri married Barbe Eyer, the daughter of Michel Eyer and Eve Marguerithe Schneider of Kutzenhausen on 3 September 1844, in Kutzenhausen, Alsace. Their seven children were all born in Kutzenhausen between 1845-1860. Henry's wife Barbe died in Kutzenhausenon 28 August 1860, not long after the birth of their last child Frederic. In addition, their daughter Salome, just a little over three years of age, died on 21 November 1860. Henry immigrated to America in 1870 (some of his family members had preceded him; others followed) and by 1870 he was settled in Utica, Oneida County, New York. He eventually moved on to Rochester where he settled permanently and had three of his children and their families nearby. Henry died on 25 May 1903, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.
