Willis Dean Rockwell was born July 30, 1941 in Dove Creek CO. To Alva (Cap) Rockwell and Fern (Wattenburger) Rockwell. He died October 22, 1960 from an accidental gunshot wound. Survivors, in addition to his parents are two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Wade of Polvadera NM., and Faith Rockwell of the family home; Three brothers, Alva F., Lowell E., and Alfred Keith Rockwell. His paternal grandmother, Mrs. Molly Rockwell of San Jose CA., and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Wattenburger of Grand Junction CO.
Funeral services were held in the Dove Creek Assembly of God Church, Tuesday, with Rev. Larry Godfrey officiating. Burial was in the Dove Creek Cemetery with Ertel Funeral Home directing.
Dropped Rifle causes fatal chest wound:
Willis Rockwell 19, dies in the Cortez Hospital, Saturday morning as the result of an accidental gun shot wound.
The youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Rockwell, was leaving his home three miles West of Dove Creek when a .22 caliber rifle he was carying dropped to the porch steps and discharged. The bullet entered his body on the Right side and lodged in his chest.
Dr. Louis Hasbrouck, who rushed to the scene along with the VFW Ambulance, said Rockwell had lost consciness when he arrived, that only a faint pulse beat, and no blood pressure were detected as he was taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez.
He was pronounced dead minutes after arriving at Southwest Memorial Hospital.
