Gary Lee Allen was born on November 12, 1941, in Perry. He was the son of Glen and Velma (Snyder) Allen. Gary was educated in Perry schools. He served in the US army during the Korean and Viet Nam wars. Gary worked in construction and as a mechanic. He also took small engine and marine repair and also motorcycle repair classes at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.
On January 20, 1968, Gary married JoAnn Tammen at St John Lutheran Church in Lizard Township. The couple made their homes in Perry, Humboldt and Pocahontas before settling on their farm near Rolfe. In 2008, they moved to Pocahontas. JoAnn passed away on April 10, 2009, and Gary has continued to make his home in Pocahontas.
Gary was a member of the National Fishing Club and the National Handyman Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, tinkering and winning at casinos.
Survivors include his son: Glen (Tina) of Rolfe; daughter: Jacklynmae (Jay) Allen Black of Rolfe; seven grandchildren; great-grandsons: Eric, Logan and Spencer Lobberecht and sister, Beverly (Herb) Kaplan of the Bahamas.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant daughter, Sally Ann and brothers, Russell and Richard.
