He had a failed and short marriage to a young woman (Diane) he met while stationed in USMC Wilmington, Delaware, They had no children. Don returned home where he met and married his life’s mate, Edith Ione Hetchler in 1956. They had three children: Cindy Lee, Donald Thomas, Jr., (Tommy) and Robert C. (Bobby)
He passed following a traffic accident and was survived by Ione and their three children as well as his parents, Robert and Helen Rains, one sister and one brother. He was a loving, kind man whose life was too short.
