Jose de los Angeles Carranza, born in Mexico, married Maria Agapita Torres on 12 Jan 1851 at Mission San Gabriel, Los Angeles County, CA[SG Marriages 131 ECPP].
According to an interview with son Geronimo Carranza, Jose and Agapita settled in San Bernardino County, CA where Jose worked as a farmer until after the birth of their first two children, Saturnina and Geronimo. The family then relocated to San Luis Obispo area where Jose began raising stock and his family grew with the births of Feliz, Miguel, and Dolores.
Jose and Agapita moved their family to Lower (Baja) California where Jose purchased a ranch, becoming part of the cattle business on a larger scale than in California.
The family stayed in Baja California where the children were all educated.
Their five children were:
Saturnina who first married Felisciano Ruiz de Esparza and had two children:Erminia & Timothy. Saturnina then married Henry C Johnson and had 5 children: Reuben, Sarah, John, Maria, and Philina Johnson.
Geronimo who married Delphina Ontiveros and had 5 children: Ricardo Florencia, Angelina, Maria, Erminia, and Patricio Carranza.
Felis Feliciano who married Rosa Ontiveros and had 8 children: Jose Luis, Gerardo, Inez, Margarita, Josepha, Pilar Felicidad, Adulia, and Clorinda Carranza.
Miguel del Refugio who married Sara Ontiveros and had two children: Alonzo Rodolfo and Esperanza Leonor Carranza.
Dolores who never married.
When General Castro, Governor of Lower California was killed Feliciano Ruiz de Esparza (by then husband of Saturnina Carranza) became Governor. When the revolution caused Esparza to retreat to Mexico City, father-in-law Jose Carranza lost his property and the family was banished. Nearly a year later, after having been stranded on an island, the family was rescued and taken to the Port of San Quintin, then traveling further north to San Diego, CA where Jose later died.
In 1873 the widow Agapita moved with her children to the Sisquoc area of Santa Barbara County where she was still living in 1880.
At the time of her death in 1899 Agapita, age 88, was living with her son Geronimo Carranza and his family in their home on the Suey Ranch.
