Thank you so much for posting the memorial for Alex Chalmers! He was a son of Lewis Chalmers, "the" mining capitalist responsible for much of the early mining here in Alpine County, California from 1869 to about 1885. Lewis Chalmers left letterbooks behind that indicate that Alex's birth date was April 28, 1854. Alex was quite artistic, and painted several scenes around Alpine County, including one oil painting of the town of Markleeville, made for a local judge in the summer of 1885, JUST before the town burned to the ground. So it is the only remaining view we have of what Markleeville looked like. That painting hangs in our local Alpine County Museum, along with another painting by Alex of the IXL Mill (also here in Alpine). Hope this is helpful, and thanks again!
