Amelia grew up in Southampton, NY with 10 sisters and one brother. She graduated from Southampton High School and went to college in New York City. She studied physical education to become a gym teacher. She ended up being a physical therapist for a private family. She met her husband, Walter, at a wedding. Four children later, she went to work part-time for a
private nursery school. When her youngest child was older she worked full-time for another private nursery school in Farmingdale. These schools were not baby-sitting the children--they were teaching them. Amelia had a first grade class which she enjoyed teaching.
