Victor Bakaj, 88, lifetime resident of Garfield, died at Hackensack University Medical Center on Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Victor was a decorated veteran of the United States Army, serving in WW II. He was a rifleman in Co F 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, and was awarded a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, an EAME campaign medal and a Sharpshooter badge. Prior to his retirement, Victor worked as a machinist for the Bendix Corp. in Teterboro. He was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Kostka R.C. Church in Garfield. In his younger days he enjoyed bowling, and in his later years, he enjoyed going to the races where he befriended several of the famous local jockeys. Victor was the beloved son of the late George and Mary (nee Kusy) Bakaj, dear brother of the late John, Stanley, and Michael Bakay, and Jean Gregory.
