DONALD L. BARBER

Donald L. Barber 85 of Harrison passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Central Michigan Community Hospital of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Mr. Barber was born January 27, 1922 in Farwell, the son of Willis “Avery” and Lydia (Reynolds) Barber. Don was united in marriage to Bettie Jean Higgins on May 29, 1949 in Harrison. Bettie preceded Don in death on July 28, 2007.

Mr. Barber retired from Dow Chemical in Midland, after many years of service. As dedicated ministers in the Community of Christ church in Harrison, Don and Bettie served as Elders in the church and after Don's retirement, they worked for the church as caretakers of Manitou Campgrounds. Later, Don worked at Harrison Lumber Company. Don was devoted to his family and the needs of children. A man of diverse interests, Don raised roses, loved cars and the latest automotive designs, bluegill fishing, bird watching, “puddy-tats”, golfing, the library and reading, and was interested in politics. He was a wonderful cartoonist and shared his dry sense of humor – including some really terrible puns. Don recognized the importance of the arts through music, dance, and drama; and he gained a greater appreciation of pictorial art because of his son, artist Steven Barber.

Surviving are two daughters: Sherry (Bill) Jagger of LaPorte, Indiana and Julie (Jim) Reinke of Harrison, three sons: Donald (Brenda) Barber Jr., of Nashville, Tennessee, Phillip (Kathy) Barber of Vinton, Virginia and Steven (Jessie) Barber of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, seven brothers: Gerald Barber of Clare, Ernie Barber of Cape Coral, Florida, Ellis (Doris) Barber of Muskegon, Michigan, Elton Barber of Pontiac, Michigan, Larry (Lana) Barber of Farwell, Dewey (Vicki) Barber of Prudenville, Michigan, and Bruce (Mary) Barber of East Jordan, Michigan, six sisters: Helen (Russ) Sanders of Clare, June (Don) Wallace of Farwell, Verna (K.C.) Green of Clare, Stella (Gordon) Rydman of Rosebush, Wanda (Bud) West of Beaverton, Donna Higgins, plus numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Mr. Barber also was preceded in death by his parents, one son, David Barber, one brother, Robert “Arlo” Barber and one grandson, Matthew Reinke.

Celebration of Life memorial services were held Saturday January 5, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Community of Christ Church – Harrison with the family of Donald L. Barber officiating. Interment will be in Surrey Township Cemetery, Farwell.
