The serious illness of A. E. Love, which had confined him to his bed for several weeks, following a several month period of very poor health, terminated fatally, Monday afternoon, September 26 1932. He was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in the McPherson cemetary, joining the farm on which he was born and where he spent his childhood days, and later made the family home, the funeral being held in a downpour of rain which made reaching that locality difficult. However, the sun broke out as the final rites were being observed.
Allen Edwin Love, son of Lewis Love and Martha McPherson Love, was born on the farm north of Rock Creek store on June 2 1858. His father, a minister and practicing physician, died in 1861, leaving him in his mother's care, who had to earn their support by working out. A younger brother had died within a month of his father's death. They moved from the farm to what is now Mitchellsville, later returning to Hardin county, and here young Allen went to work on his own at the age of 13, putting in a life of labor from that time until decrepitude of advanced years caused him to desist, when he and his wife moved to Elizabethtown, where they have since made their home.
He was first married to Mary Ashford in 1874 and they settled on a small farm near Philadelphia school, part of the old farm, to which they made additions later. Here, where they lived for 50 years, their eight children were born and reared, except one son, Ollie, who died in infancy; two others, Martha and Marion, are deceased, the others: John A., Sylvester, Jas. T., and W. Clarence, all residents of Hardin county, Loren W. of East Alton. The mother died in 1925 and in 1929 he was again married to Mrs. Eliza Hicks, who survives him.
Mr. Love was a highly respected citizen and a useful member of society, held in high esteem by all who knew him. For 34 years, he was superintendent of the Christian sunday school of Philadelphia and served in other capacities during his long residence there, and his many friends regret his passing from among them.
The services at the home were in charge of the Odd Fellows order and those at the grave were directed by the Masons, to both of which orders he belonged.
