She married Nathan Kirschbaum on April 5, 1962 in Roslyn, N.Y.; he preceded her in death on May 5, 2006.
Her interests and hobbies included tennis, bowling, swimming, needlepoint, sailing small sailboats, gardening and bird watching.
She moved to Silverdale, WA in 2001 to be near her grandchildren. She was previously a resident of Huntington, N.Y. and Blacksburg, Virginia.
She is survived by her sister Katherine Caperna and her husband Aldo of Merrick, N.Y., son Daniel J. Kirschbaum and his wife Patricia and their two children Jacob Joseph and Sarah Rose of Silverdale, WA and son Andrew R. Kirschbaum and wife Barbara Bell and son David and daughter Kim Anh of Hood River, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews.
Joan had the most lovely smile and disposition. All who knew her loved her deeply and that love was always strongly returned. She was as close to a perfect mother and wife as possible and her family and many friends surrounded her with love through her long battle with Alzheimer's.
