Mrs. Fred Meade Former Resident Dies In Ashland
Mrs. Lula Butler Meade, 78, wife of the late Fred Meade died in an Ashland hospital February 19, 1958, following a heart attack. A former resident of this county, Mrs. Meade had lived in Ashland for the past ten years and at the time of her death was making her home with her daughter, Miss May Meade. Although she had been in ill health for a number of years, her sudden death shocked and grieved her many friends in this section. She was born May 3, 1879, at Staffordsville, the daughter of the late George and Atha Jane Preston Butler. Prior to her marriage to Mr. Meade on December 8, 1909, she was a teacher of the Johnson County Schools. A woman of outstanding capabilities, she devoted her talents and energies to the youth of this county and exerted a tremendous influence in their early development, which was later reflected in their outlook and achievements. A member of the Freewill Baptist Church for sixty years, her life was a testimonial to her beliefs and principles, and her faith and Christian devotion enriched and inspired the lives of those with whom she came in contact. Her husband preceded her in death in June 1953. Also preceding her in death were two infant children, Gladys and Everett. Surviving are eight children; six daughters, Mrs. Crate Rice, Mrs. Robert Gunning, Mrs. W. C. Bailey, Mrs. Hysel Burchett all of Paintsville; Miss May Meade, Ashland; Mrs. W. T. Welch, Lexington; two sons, Gus and Fred H. Meade, Wheelersburg, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Ella Butler, City; 17 grandchildren. 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday in the chapel of the Paintsville Funeral Home with C. C. Hall, Willard Wilcox and Robert Kitchen officiating. Active pallbearers were grandsons and nephews, Gary Meade, Harold Rice, Eugene Rice William L. Welch, Dwight Burchett, Samuel Butler, Fred Witten and Willard Wilcox. Burial was in the Meade Cemetery at Staffordsville.
