Irene Agnes Davis died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Conifer House in Corvallis. She was 97.

Irene was born on Aug. 30, 1912, in Epping, N.D., to Joseph and Lena Shrempp Hoehn. She grew up in North Dakota, and married Floyd Burington on Feb. 17, 1929. Together they had seven children. In 1942, the family moved to Philomath. There Irene worked as a custodian at West School, which was across the street from their home on Eighth Street.

In 1955, Irene moved to Newport, and, in 1961, married Victor C. Davis. While in Newport, she worked at a cannery for a short time, then as a clerk for Safeway. In 1977, she moved to Corvallis and had lived here since. She enjoyed crochet, needlework, traveling and playing bingo. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Corvallis, the American Legion Auxiliary in Newport, and the Rebekahs.

She is survived by two sons, Wayne of California, and Dan of Idaho; two daughters, Betty Neuman of Philomath and Donna Pompe of Albany; 30 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three daughters and four grandchildren.

An evening vigil service is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at McHenry Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
