She was born a daughter of the late John Walter and Hannah Maness Chandler. Marie loved children and taught Kindergarten at First United Methodist Church in Wadesboro and later, along with Sara Faulkner, taught at the Little Red Schoolhouse. She later taught reading at Morven Elementary School. She had a great love for music. She taught private piano lessons for more than 30 years, directed the Morven Community Choir for many years, served as pianist at Morven United Methodist Church and served as music director for First United Methodist Church in Wadesboro. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, S.W. "Zip" Whisnant III. Her grandson, Tom Whisnant, preceded her in death. Marie died in Carolinas Medical Center at age 83.
