Clarence Tolman was born Jan 3, 1906 to Albert Ray and Clara Edith Tolman née Burrows. He was born with scarlet fever, but held onto life with great tenacity. He spent the first ten years of his life with his maternal grandparents, Orson J. and Alice (Crompton) Burrows. Buster attended the Milton School at Lacombe for four years. In 1908, his father married Rachel Ellen Elizabeth Beeson née Lane, also known as Nellie. After their marriage, Nellie's small house from her homestead (NE25-33-22-W4M) was moved to Ray's farm and incorporated into his two-story house. In January 1916 Buster came to the farm at Rumsey to join his father and Rachel, and brothers John (Jack) Orson and Arthur Ralph. He attended Tolman School for four years and that completed his formal education. In 1919, the Ray Tolman family moved into Rumsey, AB and rented out the farm to Charlie Crocker. That house burned down about 1932 and they moved back to the farm.

In the early 1920's, Buster worked for his father at the International Harvester Agency unloading Titan tractors off flat cars, and delivering them throughout the district. In 1923, he worked at the Wooden Coal Mine, operating the hoist and working underground, laying track and blasting coal. Commencing in 1925, Buster worked for three years for Mrs. Frizzel at her store in Queenstown, AB. When his brother Ralph died in 1933, Buster and his father Ray farmed Ralph's place.

On September 14th, 1939, during WWII, Buster enlisted in the Calgary Highlanders Engineers Division and served six years in Great Britain, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. In England (1941) he met Doris (Dorie) Louise Slawson, a teller in a post office savings bank. They were married on November 3, 1943, in St. Luke's Parish Church, London. Buster was posted to Holland and Dorie returned to her mother's (Alberta Slawson) home to live. After peace was declared, Buster received his discharge on August 9, 1945 and returned to Rumsey to await Dorie's arrival (March 1946).

Buster and Dorie bought and farmed the Matheson farm until 1961, when they sold it and bought a house in Rumsey. Dorie died May 9, 1963. Buster worked as the postmaster in Rumsey for seven years, retiring on October 15, 1970. Buster died in 1998, age 92, and is buried near Dorie in the Rumsey Cemetery, Rumsey, AB.
