Stephen spent time at the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteers in Hampton, VA in 1917 and 1918; he had enlisted in the 111 PA Inf in 1861 and was discharged as disabled in 1863. He had enlisted again in 1864 in the NY volunteers cavalry.
In 1901, he applied for a pension due to the death of his son Frank D. Thompson.
