ABE & WINNIE JO LEVINE
Abraham "Abe" Levine, age 96, and Winnie Jo Smith Levine, age 84, were reunited on June 23, 2014 when Abe passed away peacefully at Grace Rehab Center in Vero Beach.
Abe was predeceased by his wife, Winnie Jo Levine, who passed in her sleep at home on April 16, 2014. Married for 54 years, they were inseparable and lovingly devoted. They simply couldn't live without each other!
Abe was born in New York and graduated with Honors from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga with a B.S. in Chemistry.
After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy and was a World War II veteran, serving as an Ensign. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Lt. Commander with the Naval Reserve.
After his discharge, he owned and operated the famous "Murray's Bar and Grill" in Chattanooga until 1960.
From 1960 – 1980, he owned "JoJo's Bar and Grill" on Brainerd Road named after his wife. JoJo's was popular with the college kids and he loved hosing them down when they were too rowdy!
Upon retirement in 1980, they moved to Vero Beach where they made many friends around town, at Village Green and more recently at The Club. Having a love of tennis since he was 14, Abe began working for the City of Vero Beach in 1986 as a pro shop attendant.
He finally retired at age 96 after his wife passed away in April. He could always be found at the tennis courts at Riverside Racquet Complex, Leisure Square or the Vero Beach Community Center and played tennis until he was 80 something!
JoJo was born in Duckstown, TN and worked at Dupont in Chattanooga, TN.
She was a devoted and doting wife and friend.
She volunteered for many organizations over the years and worked part-time at Vero's Community Center from 01-06.
She loved and collected clowns and was often found dressed in her clown costume entertaining at parties and events.
Jo was a true southern belle, known for her organizational skills, a little preppy and always ensured that both she and Abe were dressed and pressed to perfection.
Both Jo and Abe were very involved with many charities as well as the Vero Beach Theatre Guild.
Since the 60's, Beta Sigma Phi was a big part of her life and she had many wonderful BSP sorority sisters that she considered her family.
Abe is survived by his daughter, Sharon LeVine, of Seattle, WA; sister, Mickey Leventhal of Chattanooga, TN; nephew, Dr. Marvin (Kris) Leventhal of Memphis, TN and niece, Robin (Rob) Leventhal Piper of Chattanooga, TN.
Winnie Jo is survived by 5 brothers, Herbert Smith of Cartersville, GA; Bobby and Don Smith of Cleveland, TN; Bill and Kenneth Smith (Jean) of Ducktown, TN, sister-in-law, Christine Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brother, Jimmy Smith and sister, Betty Smith Mosley.
They were also survived by many close and special friends, including but not limited to JoJo's BSP sisters, their goddaughter Cindy Cox and good friends, Gaby Dwyer and Clara Lou Lockwood, all of Vero Beach and Delores Leigh of Chattanooga.
Many thanks all of their doctors, the ladies at The Club that looked after them for the past few years and to Grace Rehab for the wonderful care and love they provided Abe over the last couple of months.
