John M. Baumunk, 75, at attorney-at-law in Brazil for 44 years, died at 6:09 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in his home.
Born in Brazil on July 9, 1926, he was the son of John Wesley Baumunk, a judge of the Clay Circuit Court, and Ethel M. Collier Baumunk.
Following his graduation from Brazil High School, he earned a B.S. degree in secondary education from Indiana State University. He began teaching Social Studies and English at Brazil High School until he was called into military service during World War II with an infantry unit that saw battle action in Africa and eastern Europe.
After the war, he returned to the classroom only to be recalled to duty with the U.S. Army at the onset of the Korean conflict. Completing a one-year tour in Japan with an Army reserve materials group, he returned home again and decided to enroll in law school at Indiana University.
He began his legal practice in 1957, was the Clay County prosecuting attorney from 1958-1970, was County Attorney and City Attorney at various times and also for the county hospital board for 30 yeas. Prior to school consolidation, he was legal advisor to the Brazil School Board.
Baumunk was a member of First United Methodist Church, BPO Elks Lodge 762, Clay County American Legion Post 2, VFW Post 1127, the clay County Bar Association, was a former member and past president of the Rotary Club.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed many fishing and hunting excursions in other areas of the United States.
Survivors include his wife, Betty R. Baldridge Baumunk.
Private family services will be held Monday with Pastor Jerry Clark officiating. Cremation will follow the services. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday in Miller Memorial Chapel.
